A new GS is ready to ride the day you collect it. It is not ready to fall over, and every GS falls over eventually. Usually at walking pace, usually in a parking lot, always with an audience. Here is what we would fit first, in order.
1. Crash bars
Lower bars protect the cylinder heads, which are the first thing to touch the ground on a boxer. Upper bars protect the tank, radiators and bodywork. Start with the lowers if budget is tight. Shop protection.
2. A headlight protector
Gravel roads throw stones, and modern GS headlights are expensive to replace. A clear guard costs a fraction of a new unit and you stop wincing every time a truck passes.
3. A side stand foot
The standard side stand sinks into grass, sand and hot tar. A wider foot is a small part that saves a big embarrassment at the campsite.
4. Somewhere to put things
A top box for day-to-day, or soft bags if you ride rough roads. Your backpack will thank you. Hard luggage · Soft luggage.
5. Comfort for the long days
A taller screen, a better seat or tank pads. The GS will happily do 600 km in a day. Make sure you can too. Comfort upgrades.
Bonus: rider training
The best upgrade has no part number. We list the schools we have trained with on our rider training page.
